Professional Experience René is the President and founder of Beacon Valuation Group LLC. His core experience includes conducting an extensive array of business valuation engagements, having determined and opined to the value of more than 250 major business entities and over 10,000 distinct intangible assets in connection with mergers and acquisitions, financial reporting, reorganization, liquidation, domestic and international taxes, strategic corporate planning, and litigation. In addition to valuing closely-held companies, René specializes in intangible asset and intellectual property valuation, with significant experience in executing engagements for financial reporting purposes in accordance with ASC 820 (formerly SFAS 157), ASC 805 (formerly SFAS 141R), and ASC 350 (formerly SFAS 142), as well as tax compliance and planning. A representative sample of intangible assets valued includes existing technology, IPR&D, patents, customer lists, strategic relationships, trade names, brand names, contracts, non-competes, licensing agreements, favorable leases, assembled workforce, and goodwill. Prior to forming Beacon, René served both domestic and international clients while employed at American Appraisal Associates and the Big Five accounting firm of Arthur Andersen, as well as an independent consultant, having aided corporations of all sizes, stages of development, and financial health. During his valuation tenure, René has written several articles and been a guest speaker and faculty member at various industry conferences and major professional venues held nationwide and internationally on the subject of intangible asset and intellectual property valuation. René has been an active officer on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers, the nation’s oldest and largest interdisciplinary appraisal organization, where he also served as President during 2004-2005. René is a member of the Appraisal Issues Task Force, a voluntary group of professional appraisers who meet quarterly to interpret existing and proposed rules set forth by the FASB and the SEC, and evaluate proposals and recommend methodology, assumptions and approaches as they relate to business valuation matters. In addition, René was one of four developers in 2007-2008 of a three-day course, “Valuing Intangible Assets for Financial Reporting Purposes,” for the American Society of Appraisers. During 2009-2010, René was on a selected development team focusing on an advanced three-day seminar, "Special Topics in the Valuation of Intangible Assets," also offered by the American Society of Appraisers.
